M7 Blog Post 6 - Integrating Gaming and Simulations Into My Classroom
As an educator of young children I always find that they get excited about the weather therefore introducing them to details about weather and climate will spark their curiosity about what happens throughout the year as the weather changes. Weather and climate discussions also offer opportunities for them to become critical thinkers. Lessons and discussions on weather can allow children to explore the causes and effects of different types of weather.
Weather impacts our daily routines, from what we wear to the type of activities we can engage in. Teaching kids about the weather helps them plan for their day, helps them to understand the seasons. It empowers them to think about what is needed in each type of weather, such as carrying an umbrella on a rainy day or dressing warmly in winter. Learning about weather contributes to children's awareness of environmental issues. For older children it can spark curiosity about climate change, natural disasters, and the impact of human activities on weather patterns and the environment.
The simulation I chose is weather wiz kids, this website offers a number of experiments, and information about weather suitable for kids. It covers topics such as tornadoes, hurricanes, clouds, and weather instruments in a way that is easy to understand and engaging. The experiments range from tornadoes in a bottle to measuring snow and even making fog which can be fun for young children. The website games are coming soon but there is a section that features questions kids ask about weather to which the answers are provided.

Integrating this website into a classroom study will be beneficial in many areas of learning such as science, language, math and art. Science will allow me to introduce weather and conduct experiments, for older students who are able to write, language will allow me to engage them in creating reports and writing descriptive passages about what they learned. Weather themed art projects can be created and shared in the form of paintings, collages and more.
For some children who get an early exposure to how weather and climate works, this can spark a lifelong passion and even lead to future careers in meteorology, environmental science, or related fields. Fostering their interest at a young age, can help them pursue these paths with much confidence and enthusiasm. Weatherwizkids also has a career corner on its site which is a great asset for students who have a passion for weather.
The learning objectives for a lesson on weather will focus on ensuring that my students grasp the concepts of weather and apply what they learn in real life situations. The main learning objective will be for students to identify weather and its elements. For an effective outcome on implementing a lesson on weather I must consider student engagement and have an introduction that will capture their attention. Use of visual aids such as pictures, diagrams and props like weather instruments, pictures of different weather conditions to show key weather elements such as temperature, precipitation, wind, and clouds.
Scaffolding and differentiation will be executed by simplifying vocabulary words and also with the use of visual aid for my visual learners such as diagrams and videos. Group work and activities is a great way to accommodate learners who need differentiation as this encourages peer to peer engagement and allows them to learn from each other. Assessment can be conducted in the form of quizzes for older students and discussions for young ones, this will give me the opportunity to evaluate how I implemented the lesson and how effective it was.
